Supporting A Mobile Lifestyle With Online Marketing

Supporting A Mobile Lifestyle With Online Marketing

Our Soon-To-Be Mobile Lifestyle

My family and I are planning our escape. It’s been years in the making, but the time is drawing near for us to execute our plan.

In this post, I’m going to talk about how my Online Marketing business is going to be supporting my family as we travel the world by sailboat.

Yes, you heard right. Sailboat.

For the longest time we’ve talked about how we wanted to travel for a long, uninterrupted period of time. On our vacations, we’ve been to places like Cozumel, Nassau, Grand Cayman – and we love it! Trouble is that those times always seem to come to and end before you are ready to leave.

There is so much to explore in those tropical places, and every time we are able to make it down there, our time is always governed by factors that are outside of our control. Typically we make our way down there by cruise ship, and we are only there for a day at a time. We are looking for ways to stay down there for a good long while, but also not wanting to move down there permanently.

The solution for us is to purchase a sailboat that will both take us there and also serve as our “house” while we are galavanting around the the Bahamas.

Internet Marketing Sailboat

Challenges And Limitations

I know the idea of sailing the Bahamas sounds all well and good,
No Internet On Sailboatbut then when you start thinking about how to fund such a grand adventure, that’s when reality really starts to set in.

There is one particularly BIG limitation to keeping a business running while we’re sailing abroad. Know what is is?

Internet and phone connections sucks in the Bahamas.

As you can imagine, the prospect of running just about any business nowadays without convenient access to phone and internet connections is pretty tough to do.

I mean, how do you run an internet business… without internet?

Well, thankfully, one of the shining attributes of an online business is that it can be set up in such a way that the vast majority of the online marketing business related tasks are automated.

  • Payments: I have all of my incoming payments set up through Paypal.
  • Subscribers: I teach, coach, and train through a series of automatic emails through my MadMimi account.
  • Posting: I can write posts in advance and schedule them to be posted at pre-determined intervals.
  • Support: My Virtual Assistant is trained and ready to handle any support-related issues when/if I can’t personally.

Online Marketing & Living Abroad

An Online Marketing Business and living abroad really do fit nicely together. Considering that we will be literally out of communication with much of the Earth, the importance of having a business that will “run itself” becomes of significant importance.

Laptop At BeachOn one hand, we need to have steady money coming in so that we can finance this dream of ours.

On the other hand, we need for the business to be almost completely automated because I will be unavailable to work on it manually much of the time.

I know there probably aren’t many (any) of you whoa re reading this that have the same crazy motivation for setting up your online business the same way as I do. Still, isn’t it cool to think that you can have things running in this manner if you chose to?

When you have money coming into your world that you don’t have to work for, you don’t have bill people for, you don;t have to make product for – don’t you think that it opens up your options in a big way? Sure it does.

I really want you to be as fired up as I am over the potential that this business offers. If it weren’t for having this as a direct, hands-off, source of income, our options to live on a sailboat in the Bahamas would be much more limited.

Our Current Status

This next bit here isn’t going to be online marketing business related, but I wanted to let you know where we are in the whole “sailboat adventure” process.

  • Business Automation: I’m taking additional steps to be sure that I have the business set up as “hands-off” as possible. Eventually, within the next 3-6 months, we are going to be living on a boat. Between now and then I’m doing lot’s of writing ahead of time, getting systems set up, training my VA, and ironing out little problems so that we can make this happen.
  • My Primary Residence: We’ve cleaned out closets, we’ve made 6 trips to the donation center, I’ve sold loads of stuff on eBay, and we’re basically in full-on liquidation mode. My truck is up for sale, and we’re getting house ready to rent out.
  • Stocking Up: We’re getting things like clothes, supplies, cookware, sailing charts, sailing books, and all other things that we anticipate needing once we are out there on our own.
  • Home Schooling: Our daughter has actually just entered Kindergarten this year, but we’ll end up pulling her from school at some point and taking up home-schooling on the boat. There is actually a free internet based school that you can do, but with internet being so dicey in the Bahamas we’ll be doing the book-based course instead.
  • Packing Up Belongings: There is a pile of stuff that we are taking with us, and another pile of stuff that we are storing. Even right now, there is a 4″ high x 6″ wide stack of boxes in our living room as we are getting things packed away in anticipation of our departure.

Here’s a picture of my wife Tambi, buried in the contents of one of our previously over-stuffed closets…

Tambi Cleaning Closet

So, right now we are in the middle of a bunch of different tasks. Some are business related, some are school related, and others are preparation related. It’s all coming together though is an half-excited, half-confused manner. As far as the sailing related stuff, we are learning much of that as we go.

It’s a good feeling putting direct effort and energy into a big-picture goal that you really believe in.

We 3 and the sea

I actually have some of the same feelings for our sailing adventure as I did initially for the online marketing business. A big mix of excitement, uncertainly, and positive energy. It’s all good though. We’re having fun, and headed in a direction that is completely new to us.

You Day #1 Lesson Is On The Way!

  1. Ben, I loved the article on your family sailing away. I love the ocean and being on a boat. I too plan to be able to have a completely mobile business but I am just in the beginning stages. You have a lot of information on your site that will help a new person like me. Some of the things like putting in graphs and links is above me at this point. I think your home page really grabs the reader right from the beginning. It made me want to work harder on my site. One of my life goals is to own a 65 foot fishing boat and get my six pack license. Great site, Steve

    • Hey there Steve!

Thanks for stopping by. Yes, moving on the boat will be one of the biggest steps in “the unknown” that we’ve ever taken. We’re certainly accustomed to a somewhat adventurous lifestyle, but this is definitely taking it to the next level. Thanks for the compliments about the website. Always good to hear that my readers are enjoying the content that I’m creating for them. Get out there and get your 65′ boat! We can take the jump together!

      Thanks Steve.

  2. Hi Ben,

Wow… I am so happy to come across this post. This has always been a passion of mine as well. To be able to travel the world, but to be able to afford it as well.

I work a 9-5 job living paycheck to paycheck. No time for travel nor the money. But to know that I can create an online business and be able to travel at the same time while still earning money… is AWESOME!!!

This online income stream that you talk about, are these books that you order? Is it an online program? How much does it cost? I would like to know more about this before I sign up to anything, you know? I have been scammed a few times and I told myself that won’t ever happen again. Thanks for sharing this and look forward to hearing back from you.

    • Tanya,

Thanks for the comment. No, the course is not a book-based course. It’s all email delivered.
All you have to do is sign up, and the first lesson will arrive in your inbox within about 5 minutes. It’s the best way to get your start in this business.

      Try it out!

  3. HI Ben. You have nice plan, and it looks as though you have prepared well for all of the things you need. My question is, if someone sent money to your Paypal, can you cash the money? Wow, the whole sailing thing is a big step! I think I would be afraid to do anything as big as that. However, wish you all the best on your big adventure. Sounds amazing and it’s cool to know that your business is paying for it.

    • Yes, thanks for the supporting words for our crazy plan.
Always good to hear that we’re not completely off our rocker!

  4. Hey Ben,

Great site, I loved in particular the part when you spoke about video educational videos. For me personally this is important because I am super visual person when it comes to learning something new so its good that you can cater to this type of audience.
So many people are waking up now and are trying to find there own way in regards to becoming financially free so its amazing that your apart of this niche in helping people see this possibility.

    great work

    • Thanks for the kinds words and for the feedback on the post. I do think people are coming around to the ida that making money online is a viable way to help free themselves financially – or at the very least, supplement the income that they are already generating.

  5. Hi Ben!

Excellent article! I loved also the idea of working online and be with the family. Not that I’m going to acquire me a boat.

Since it is not just my style.

But to have a business that I can build on wherever I am in the world is the estimate tank.

Now that you are writing to you from time to time have to work far in advance how you maintain contact with your clients?

    • Steen!

No need to acquire a boat – although it would be really cool to see you out there sometime floating around with us. Having streams of income gives you the ability to do whatever you want with your time – that’s the best part of this whole thing.

Thanks for the comment, and check in at the website every once in a while to see what’s new.

  6. Wow Ben! What an adventure you’ve got planned for yourself and family. Sounds like it id going to be quite the trip. You have more “guts” than I do as far as that’s concerned. How much experience do you have operating a sailboat? What time of the year are you planning to head out? What’s the weather like around that time until you get back to where you want to be? Your wife isn’t wondering if this is a crazy idea? How much is your business making for you now that you feel confident enough that your income will remain stable?

I really like the idea of running a business that affords that kind of freedom. It sounds really fantastic! I know it can be done because others have done it, but I imagine it is like any other business in that it requires constant attention and dedication. It takes a while before the passive income surpasses the active work up towards it. The idea of complete auto-pilot seems to me to be more of a fantasy than a reality. But, I’m interested to hear what you have to say upon the conclusion of your trip … What you learned from this adventure regarding the operation of an online business without having internet access for a long period of time. You’ve got my curiosity level up. I’ll attempt to remember to check up on your blog to find out.

All in all though, I’m really looking forward to you succeeding in this. Because if, or should I say when, you do, that will give further hope to other online business entrepreneurs to follow suit with the automation that you’ve put in place and likewise live lives of freedom and enjoyment while earning comfortably from wherever they may find themselves … online or off.

Good luck and all the best wishes!

    • Abe,

It is a big adventure. Prior to making this big decision, we didn’t have any prior sailing experience, however, we have been going out frequently to get as much experience as we can. We’re trying to be living on the boat in the next couple months, then actually departing to the Bahamas in November or December. The weather will vary, but should be fairly warm most of the time.

The wife loves the idea. This isn’t the first crazy idea I’ve had that we’ve enjoyed as a family, but it is certainly the largest and most complex to make happen. The nice thing about living on a boat is that your expenses are typically pretty low. We’re planning on living on about $1000 a month while we’re out there.

Yes, it’s tough to get started building income, but it can 100% be put on complete autopilot. Between my affiliate stuff and some online Real Estate courses I sell, we’ve definitely got the bases covered financially.

For more info on the whole sailing thing, you can check us out on YouTube, or go to the Blog website. I’ll throw a couple links down below.

Thanks for the great comment, and be sure to keep in touch!

  7. You are living the type of lifestyle that I wanted to live in when I got started with the online business world. Except without the sailboat part though lol. I’ve wanted to travel the world freely and exploring and making all my income from online. So far its been working great and I am increasing my income everyday. I find stories like yours very inspiring and motivating. Keep up the good work

    • Honestly, for me, the money part wasn’t that hard to get squared away. The tricky part to living a traveling, on-the-move kind of lifestyle, was breaking away from our local family and friends. Also, managing our home as a rental from afar sometimes has it’s challenges, but overall – the money part wasn’t all that tough in comparison to some of the other challenges that come along as a result.

  8. Wow what a wonderful idea – I am so, so jealous of you (currently sitting in a cloudy Wales in front of my laptop trying to come up with new article/post ideas!).
What a great way to build a business and bring your family into the equation too – I bet they are super excited about it all? How are you going to get over the threat of poor internet conections – are you still worried about this?
