In this informative post, I’m going to tell you about a little “secret” that most online marketers would never disclose. Ranking your website with low competition keywords. This little trick is a way that you can get your website to rank in the 1st position quicker than any other method.
Website SEO is basically about giving people the content that they are searching for. Based on how well you are optimizing your website, Google and the other search engines will rank your website based on how well they feel that you are providing good, relevant information for the people that are entering search terms into the search engines.
One of the primary ways that you can “steer” people towards your website, is by building your content and posts around specific keywords. Basically, you want to pick keywords that are relevant to the content on the pages of your website.
Low Competition Keywords
So, what is a low competition keyword? Basically, it’s a keyword that not very many other people are using on their website. Sometimes, you can even be the ONLY person who is using a particular low competition keyword on a website.
The biggest distinguishing factor through, is that most low competition keywords also have low traffic.
Make sure that you catch that, because this what this ranking strategy is all about.
What these keywords lack in volume of search traffic, you can make up for by having little-to-no competition. You see, when you find low competition keywords, you are avoiding the vast majority of the competition. While your competitors are all fighting over the super-high traffic, high-competition keywords, you can be over on the side generating your own traffic by focusing on low competition keywords.
Even though your per-keyword search volume will be low, you can make up for it by using MORE keywordss.
2 Schools Of Thought
There are 2 main ways that you can attract visitors to your websites by strategically choosing keywords. 1 way is the method that 99% of the marketers out there use, while the other method is far less common, but very effective if implemented properly.
- Target high traffic / high competition keywords: This is what most people do. That’s why the competition level is so high. Everyone tends to focus in on ranking their website for the same keyword, but only a few people are able to get any worthwhile traffic because so many people are fighting over the same high competition keywords.
- Target low traffic / low competition keywords: Over on this side of the fence, there is far less competition. What that means is that you can quickly and easily rank your website on the first page of the search engines by just cherry picking the low competition keywords. Yes – you’re per-keyword search traffic will be lower, BUT you can easily make up for that by simply adding a higher volume of keywords to make up for the traffic deficit. Problem solved!
Why It Works
Most people tend to get tunnel vision when they are trying to rank their website. They want to most traffic, right away, and they tend to choose the keywords with super-high search traffic. Trouble is that all they really end up doing is battling it out with hundreds of other websites that are trying to do the same thing.
Few people see the benefit in going after low search volume keywords. I mean – who does that?? Well, not very many people, and that’s exactly what makes this a better option!
So, really, what is a low competition keyword? Well, usually it’s one that is a bit longer. Most really hot keywords are short, and to the point like “Online Marketing”. That’s a super-hot keyword. Now, if you pick it apart a little bit and try to think of other search terms that are related to that one then you get low competition keywords that are a spin off of the original one.
So instead of trying to rank for “Online Marketing”, you could instead target keywords such as –
- How to learn online marketing
- Online marketing for beginners
- Making money with online marketing
- Does online marketing really work
- Building an online marketing business
Can you see the trend there? The same “root” keyword is still part of the search term, BUT by adding on a few extra words, then we are targeting a more specific audience.
The more specific the search term – the lower the competition.
Low Competition Keywords – Simplified.
Going after low competition keywords is often takes a bit of brainstorming. What you can do is start with the root search term that you are attempting to rank your page or website for. From there, have a quick brainstorming session where you can come up with a list of related search terms.
From there, you’ll want to enter in all of your low competition keywords into a software program that will show you the traffic that your keywords will generate when you rank in the top few spots within the search engines.
Now, the software I use for researching keywords is Jaaxy. I wrote a detailed review on Jaxxy that you can read if you like. In fact, you can use that software for like 50 free searches just to see how it works.
One cool thing is that I’m actually using this very strategy as I write this post. I’m picking the low competition keywords using Jaaxy, and setting this post up to be optimized for a few search terms that will generated good, steady, traffic for me.
Regardless, what you use, you’ll need a way to check out the quality of the keywords before you go building a page or a blog post around them.
If you want an outside perspective on keyword tools, here is an article that sizes up 10 other keyword tools that are available right now.
Once you analyze your keywords and pick out a group of 5 or so, then you can write a blog post or page on your website that makes use of those low competition keywords.
The Difference In Time & Energy Spent
Sure, ranking your website with a top-notch, super-high-traffic, high-competition keyword would be awesome. In fact, if that was a simple route to go, then it would be the preferred route. Unfortunately, the internet is a highly competitive arena, so it becomes very important to go in a direction with your ranking strategy that will give you actual results instead of just competing with the masses.
What is a low competition keyword? It’s one that will send traffic to your website with far less effort and competition that the alternative. By targeting low competition keywords you can effectively bring in a very similar volume of traffic to your website, but you are able to do so in a fashion that gets you ranked much more quickly and predictably that if you were to battle it out over a single highly competitive keyword.
I suggest that you take some time to find the low competition keywords for your website niche. Start building your website around those and you’ll soon see the fruits of your efforts in the form of good, high-quality search traffic.
If you’re looking for a keyword strategy that will send you to the top of the rankings as quickly as possible – I can assuredly tell you that you will get there quicker and easier by targeting the low traffic and low competition keywords.
