Creating An Online Educational Course
I’ve recently added a new income stream to my business. Now, it is a little outside of the scope of this website, but not by much. Most of the articles on this website are built around the business of internet marketing, but this new stream is a little bit different. It’s still got a lot of similarities with “internet marketing”, but it’s really it’s own unique animal. Still, I feel like it has a place here at EasyOnlineIncomeStreams.com because it is, in fact, a very legitimate way of creating an automatic stream of income.
Here’s where the money is in today’s world: Intellectual Property. What I mean by that is when you have specific knowledge in your head, there are people out there that will pay you good money to gain access to that knowledge.
The way you get your knowledge transferred to other people’s brains (for a fee) is by creating an online course. I’ve bought my fair share of online educational courses, but only recently have I begun creating purpose-built courses that people can find, buy, and pay me for.
What I want to better explain for you is how you too can leverage the value of your intellectual property, create an online educational course, and profit by teaching people what they want to know.
Introducing A Cool Website: Udemy.com
So, here’s the story. I’ve often been asked by people if I would create a Real Estate course. (If you didn’t know, I have a background in Real Estate). So, I started researching how the process works of building an online course. Not long after researching the topic, I became convinced that the only way to create a course of my own was going to require me to build a really complex, fancy, and EXPENSIVE, membership website.
This was not something I was interested in. If I chose to build my won membership website, the process would take months – or maybe even years to get everything dialed in right. Then, once the website was built, I would have to spend LOADS of time promoting it, and trying to drum up traffic. This just didn’t sound like “the juice was worth the squeeze”.
Through a close friend, it was recommended that I look u a website called Udemy.com… so I did.
Now, Udemy does all the stuff that I didn’t really want to concern myself with. They handle all of the hosting, they assist with the course-creation process, and they drive traffic to my course. The way it works is that Udemy gets a little slice of each sale – that’s why they are so motivated to make your course a success. In my opinion, the cost is very much worth the benefits you get from having them backing you, supporting you, and holding your hand through the whole course creation process.
My Experience Thus Far
What I’ve done is create a Real Estate course on Udemy.com. I took me about 2 weeks to do all of the video recording, editing, and uploading onto Udemy. In fact, I just launched the course this morning on the website so I’m optimistic to see what the results are going to be like.
At this point, I don’t have any sales, so all I can really report on is the user-experience. I will tell you, if you’ve never made an online video course before, I really feel like going through Udemy is a great thing for you. The reason I say that is because their system walks you through each step of the video-production process as you move along. There are also dedicated instructors who will review your course along the way to be sure you are creating something that is going to be adding value for your “students” – which will ultimately result in you making money.
Other Great Things About Udemy
With Udemy, you don’t have to pay for hosting. You don’t have to advertise and market your videos to drive traffic to your courses (although it wouldn’t hurt). You don’t have to pay for an ongoing membership (they make their money by collecting a small commission from each sale). You don’t have to worry about payment processing, refunds, or returns.
Anytime I’m setting up a new online income stream, I’m always working towards building something that will make me money without having to work harder to get it. In other words, I want to build my system, and be DONE. Udemy is another opporunity for me to create additional income, but without having to manage the system on an ongoing basis. THAT’S exactly what I look for, and that’s why I feel like Udemy is an excellent option for other online entrepreneurs who want to secure additional income streams by creating a series of online instructional videos that people can buy and pay you for.
The Tools For Creating An Online Educational Video Course
- A Computer
- A Camera
- A Microphone
- Video editing software
That’s pretty much it. For me, I just used my Macbook Pro for the 1st 3 tools. The camera and the microphone are already built into my computer. Depending on your computer and how it’s outfitted, you may need to use an add-on mic or camera.
The most important component to being able to produce good online educational videos is your video editing software. Basically, you need something to be able to cut out all the mistakes you will make (I make a lot), and to be able to splice the video clips together in a logical fashion. It’s also nice to be able to add text overlays, music, or even fancy intros. All that is only possible with a professional-grade video editing software.
Noe, what I use to edit all my videos is something called “ScreenFlow“. I believe it cost me $100, and that was for lifetime use of the software. It’s good stuff, but there are loads of other options out there that you can get into for anywhere between $50 and $500. Here are some other video editing software packages to choose from.
Practice, Make Mistakes, Learn, Repeat
If you’ve never recorded yourself talking in front of a camera before, I’ll tell you – you are probably going to feel pretty awkward at first. Me, I still feel a little weird talking to a camera, but I’ve gotten way more comfortable than I was when I first started.
There’s no secret to getting comfortable with it. You just have to do it, practice, make mistakes, fumble your words, say dumb things, make weird faces, and try again.
The cool thing about the video editing software is that you can cut out any areas where you made bad mistakes. When you find that you did something that you want to cut out, just pause for a second, and then pick up recording right where you left off. When you edit the file, you’ll be able to easily cut the video where you paused and were silent for a second. It’s not rocket science, but it’s definitely something that takes some getting used to.
You Call Sell Your Knowledge
I promise you this – you know how to do something better than someone else. I don’t know exactly what it is that you are REALLY good at, but everyone has strengths and weaknesses. The trick is to create your course around a topic that you have strong working knowledge about. If you can do that, then I promise you there are people out there who would gladly pay you to teach them what you know.
Get out there and create your online educational video course. Teach people through a series of quirky video lessons – they’ll love you for it, and pay you – you’ll see.
